What are Congress stock trade disclosures?
Under the STOCK Act of 2012, members of Congress must publicly report any stock trade over $1,000 no later than 45 days after the trade. Each report gives the stock, the trade date and the amount as a range rather than an exact figure. The filings are public on the House Clerk and Senate eFD websites.
How Instaport tracks them
Instaport collects new filings as they are published, matches each trade to the stock it names and shows it with both its trade date and its filing date. With a free account, you get an alert when a member of Congress trades a stock you own.
Methodology.
What is counted
Every stock, fund and option trade that members of Congress now in office reported in the periodic transaction reports they file under the STOCK Act, as published by the House Clerk and the Senate’s eFD system. A trade belongs to the month its report was made public (the filed date), not the month it was made. Other assets, and members who have left office, are not included.
How it is ranked
Every table ranks by number of trades, never by dollars. Members are ranked by their trades; stocks by purchases (most bought) or full and partial sales (most sold) of companies with a stock ticker, then by number of members. Tied places share a rank. Sector is Instaport’s grouping of each company’s SEC industry code; net buying is purchases minus sales, counted, not in dollars. 33 stock trades have no sector on file and are left out of that table.
Amounts and timing
Members report each amount as a range, such as $1,001 to $15,000, so every amount here adds up the low ends and the high ends and is never an exact figure. Days to disclose is the filed date minus the trade date; the STOCK Act allows up to 45 days. A finished month stays fixed unless a filing is corrected.
